Priyadarshan Admits Billu’s Climax Failed
When bringing the story of the "unique barber Balan" to Hindi, glamour was poured in; Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra appeared just for song sequences. Lara Dutta played the female lead.
Billu is the Hindi remake of the 2007 Malayalam hit Kadha Parayumbol. Priyadarshan admits that the film's climax could have been more emotional. The director revealed that he made a major mistake in the film starring Irrfan Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. He stated that the excessive number of songs affected the flow of the screenplay and diminished the impact of the key emotional scene featuring Shah Rukh Khan.
Seventeen years after the release of Billu, Priyadarshan opened up about certain things that didn't work out as he had hoped. He recalled how a creative decision weakened a pivotal emotional moment in the story.
In the film, Shah Rukh Khan played a superstar named Sahir Khan. The plot revolves around his return to a village where his old friend Billu works as a barber and the events that follow.
Priyadarshan also spoke about the film’s final scene. A fan pointed out that the scene where Sahir Khan delivers a touching speech about his friend while Billu walks away silently did not fully connect with the audience. "I only made one mistake in the film. I included more songs than necessary. Because of that, the tightness of the screenplay was somewhat lost," he said.
He explained that while the scene was intended to be the most emotional moment of the film, the songs throughout the movie slowed down the pace, resulting in the climax lacking the desired impact.
Currently, Priyadarshan is preparing for his next film, 'Bhooth Bangla'. A highlight of this project is the reunion of Akshay Kumar and Priyadarshan after many years. The horror-comedy, featuring actors like Tabu and Paresh Rawal, is scheduled for release on April 10, 2026.
Kadha Parayumbol (2007) is considered one of the all-time best emotional dramas in Malayalam cinema. Directed by M. Mohanan, it is one of the finest works in the career of Sreenivasan, who also wrote the screenplay.
Mammootty appears significantly only in the final 15 minutes of the film. The speech he delivers at the school anniversary function remains one of the most heart-touching scenes in Malayalam cinema.
